This is Milli, a sun bear, and her newborn cub. The 14-ounce cub was born on June 13, 2018 at the UK’s Chester Zoo. Successful captive sun bear births are rare. Milli and the cub’s father, Toni, were rescued from poachers in Cambodia after being kept as mistreated pets. Sun bear populations in Southeast Asia are rapidly declining due to hunting, habitat loss, and the illegal pet trade.

Sun bears are the smallest bear species—half the size of American black bears. Also called honey bears, they use their long tongues to scoop up insects and honey. Milli will tend to her cub in their den for about two months before they venture out together.
