What Are Track Limits?
Track limits are the boundaries around the edge of a racing circuit, defined by a white line. Drivers must keep at least two wheels within these limits. Crossing the line with all four wheels counts as a track limits violation, which can lead to penalties.
The Issue at Turns 9 and 10
In Austria, Turns 9 and 10 have been problematic due to an asphalt verge behind the exit kerbs, providing nearly the same grip as the track. This allowed drivers to gain lap time by running wide, leading to numerous track limit breaches.
What’s Been Done to Address This?
To curb this, the FIA has installed a 2.5-meter-wide gravel strip behind the kerbs at the exits of Turns 9 and 10. At Turn 4, the white line has been moved to make the distance to the gravel less than two meters, ensuring drivers can’t squeeze between the line and the gravel.
Why These Changes Matter
“These changes create a natural deterrent,” explains FIA F1 Race Director Niels Wittich. Drivers will get immediate feedback when they approach the gravel, and any wheel dipping into the gravel will slow the car down, removing any advantage from running wide.
