Soon, a Caribbean flamingo chick will peek out of this egg. Time-lapse images captured the 24-hour hatching on June 19, 2018 at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. The hatchling is part of the zoo’s conservation program.
To protect the eggs from predators, keepers remove them from their nests and place them in incubators. In about 28 days, when they start hatching, the eggs are placed in this hatcher. Out of 12 eggs fertilized this year in the zoo’s flock, 5 survived incubation.
This is the smallest hatchling, weighing in at three ounces. Vets will monitor the chick’s health and it will be hand raised by the zoo’s animal care team. The chick’s sex will be determined in about a week, after a DNA analysis.
