Some dogs had the choice to approach their owner or a stranger, and others just chose between two strangers. If a dog was brought to an unfamiliar setting, they’d tend to stick with a person they knew. But at home, dogs actually spent more time with the stranger. And if a shelter dog was in an unfamiliar location, and could choose between two strangers they would generally pick a favorite quickly, and spend most of their time with that first choice. Predicting dogs’ likely reactions to strange people and places could help us better understand our relationships with dogs.
